You’re Aging Well

Sung by Joan Baez and Dar Williams (who wrote the song)

Many thanks for this to Nancy Vala Michaels and The Sister Project, who are on a roll. Their site is fabulous.

I love that song! Dar Williams is one of my favorite singer-songwriters. Is that the “official” video for the song? I never thought of it as a historical look at feminism (”see how far we’ve come”).

Instead it seems to me that the song is meant to give women courage in the face of media, society, and industries (cosmetics, drugs, fashion) that scream at us from every direction (”the road signs point us adrift, make us afraid …”) that we are no longer acceptable if/when we get old, are unattractive, or do not have a man, and that we should even be fearful of other women (”… saying you never can win, watch your back, where’s you husband?”.

I love idea of “But one voice got through, it caught her up by surprise, it said don’t hold us back, we’re the stories you tell.” Absolutely beautifully crafted song, with a beautiful message.

If you like the message of this song, be sure to check out “Stupid Girls” by Pink (”Whatever happened to a girl president? She’s dancin’ in the video, next to 50 Cent”). If I had a daughter both songs would be required listening, and the subjects of much discussion.

Fascinating. We love Dar Williams and Joan Baez, too, at The Sister Project, so this was wonderful to see. Glad to be sisters with you two in music, WordPress, Twitter, etc.

Welcome Margaret and Linda. Thank you for your music and your message. I know from reading each of you that you believe in giving back and building up. It’s a pleasure to be with you on this journey. (I think I hear Johnny Cash singin’ some gospel to us from the Beyond!)
