Cait came across this on Etsy and it’s giving us stick envy.![]()
Woodworkers in Texas at Brazo’s Walking Stick make these sturdy beasts from ash or oak with a 36-inch ruler on the side — perfect for placing plants in the garden.
The handsome Yard Stick has a metal tip which doubles as a dibber, so not only is it a sturdy walking aid, it’s also a functional garden tool.
We fancy it would make walking around the backyard a more majestic experience and quite elevate tedious, but necessary, summer-long bug smashing.

This stick looks awesome, sturdy, and like you could put an eye out with it. Also, that tip is reminiscent of a lawn dart, the beloved game of my childhood.
I may need one of these!

I’ve never seen anything like this before! Very cool.

I love that idea! My grandfather uses a cane, but he’s never settled for anything ordinary. He sometimes finds driftwood from their house in Maine and whittles and carves it until it can be used as a walking stick.
My brother also traveled around the world and has an amazing walking stick - from Fiji, I think? They would both love this.
And as a new gardener, it sure would help me, too!

In my mind’s eye, I see you tossing this like Xena: Warrior Princess!

Personally, I hope I don’t need to use one of these for awhile.

This is the walking/gardening stick of my dreams. I didn’t even know that I needed this gimpliment so much until I saw this with my own eyes. I know what I will see in my dreams tonight! Dag-blamit! My birthday is not til fall.

Wow, this is ideal for so many uses. For some reason, I am terrible at eye-balling measurements, so frequently am off base with how far apart I place my seeds/plants. In addition, I’ve thought that a good walking stick would be worth its weight in gold. I have a feeling that I would need two of them; one for me, and one for my husband. Plus, I like the idea of doing something in a “majestic” way.

That’s awesome. Very handy, functional, and beautifully crafted. Classic.
Funny… I used to sell fueling system equipment, and it looked at first glance very much like the 14′-long wooden “tank sticks” people would used to measure the depth of fuel inventory left in their underground tanks.

Why didn’t I think of that? I suspect this would prevent me from my perennial garden design problem — tall plants growing in front of short ones — while at the same time helping me keep my balance while I’m out there. I’m headed to Etsy. Thanks for pointing it out!

That’s very clever. Now, if someone puts measurements on the handle of a hoe, then we’d really have something nice to take out to the garden.
I might just mark up one of my hoe handles as a prototype!
